how to tune a guitar
As a beginner, one of the most crucial skills you'll develop is the ability to accurately tune a guitar by ear. While there are tuners available to assist you in this task, we highly recommend learning how to do it independently. In various scenarios, you may find yourself without access to a tuner, necessitating the reliance on your ear and the guitar itself to achieve proper tuning for each string.
Though initially challenging, training your ear to discern the subtleties of string vibrations enables you to perceive the nuances in frequency waves produced by each string upon being struck.
How to tune a guitar:
Start by playing the low E string, which is the thickest string and located closest to your body when holding the guitar.
Locate the 5th fret on the low E string and play that note. Then, play the open A string and compare the pitch, if the A string is lower then turn the tuning peg until the pitch matches the note you played on the 5th fret of the low E string.
Next, locate the 5th fret on the A string and play that note. Then, play the open D string and compare the pitch, if the D string is lower then turn the tuning peg until the pitch matches the note you played on the 5th fret of the A string.
Locate the 5th fret on the D string and play that note. Then, play the open G string and compare the pitch, if the G string is lower then turn the tuning peg until the pitch matches the note you played on the 5th fret of the D string.
Locate the 4th fret on the G string and play that note. Then, play the open B string and compare the pitch, if the B string is lower then turn the tuning peg until the pitch matches the note you played on the 4th fret of the G string.
Locate the 5th fret on the B string and play that note. Then, play the open high E string and compare the pitch, if the high E string is lower then turn the tuning peg until the pitch matches the note you played on the 5th fret of the B string.
Once all the strings are in tune, it is a good idea to check the tuning again and make any small adjustments necessary.
